The Royal Crown Derby Museum Charitable Trust runs a small museum on the site of the Royal Crown Derby Factory on the Osmaston Road in Derby. We are currently financially supported by Royal Crown Derby but have ambitions to become financially independent over a period time. This would mean a significant growth in income and engagement which we are committed to achieving. We are looking for a new Treasurer who can support our ambitions over the coming years.

- Monitor the financial standing of the charity and reports to the Board. Assisting the Museum Director with P and L forecasting, income streams, out-going expenses and the overarching strategic management of the Museum’s financial resources.
- Oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process and highlight financial health to the board of trustees at regular intervals.
- Acts as a counter signatory on cheques and applications to funders and ensure that annual accounts are submitted to the charity commission in a timely fashion.
- Liaising with external auditors on financial issues and ensuring that the Museum’s finances are responsibly managed for the betterment of the charity’s work and for the beneficiaries it serves.
Main Responsibilities of the Treasurer
Budgeting and strategic financial planning
- Help the museum director think about and set up finacial systems to allow for an independent museum
- Help to ensure all strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short-term and long-term objectives each year.
- support planning/budgeting processes in participation with the Board and constructively challenge where required.
- Suggest alternative scenarios while evaluating strategic plans as a part of the risk management process and as a part of performance and reporting scenarios.
- Board level representation for finacial issues
- Guide and advise fellow trustees to formally approve the annual report and accounts.
- Explain technicalities of accounts in plain language which is fully understood by the trustees.
- Lead the Board’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans and overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process.
- knowledge of accountancy for charities and demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge.
- Knowledge of charity sector finances.
- Competent use of IT skills.
- Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders.
- Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement.
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices.
- Dedicated to the organisation’s cause and objectives and willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies.
- A team-oriented approach to problem solving and to management and a willingness to ‘help out’ in a small but ambitious museum.
- The Board meets at least 4 times a year and the Treasurer is expected to be available
- The current time commitment is small approximately one day a month. However this may increase as the museum grows.
- Board meetings are held virtually at the moment but are usually held at the charity’s premises in Derby.
