Job Description

Nautical Museums Trust Limited                          Shipwreck Museum

(registered charity No:284687                                Rock a Nore Road                                   Hastings, E Sussex

TN34 3DW

Trustee and Treasurer (Volunteer)

Situated in Rock-a-Nore, Hastings Old Town, and close to the historic Stade, is the Shipwreck Museum owned by the Nautical Museums Trust (NMT).  The NMT, which has run this fully accredited museum since 1986, is a registered charity with a clear purpose:

To advance the education of the public in maritime and coastal archaeology, history, geology and environment by the provision of a museum or museums as is considered necessary.

Situated in the popular seaside town of Hastings we want all our visitors to enjoy this family-friendly museum which tells the story of the Channel coast of South East England from the perilous Goodwin Sands to the towering white cliffs of Beachy Head.  Over millennia this shoreline, England’s front line, has been witness to dramatic events: battles, attempted invasions, smuggling and, massively, trade from all around the world.  We aim to inspire our visitors to discover and understand more about their country’s history as played out along this shore through our unique collection of national and internationally significant objects, and through the stories of the seafarers, shipwrecks and archaeological sites from which the objects came.

The Museum maintains formal and informal associations with other museums including The National Museum of The Royal Navy in Portsmouth and The Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.
