Job Description

Bees for Development (BfD) is the ground-breaking, international charity which develops beekeeping skills in the poorest communities of the world, giving people a reliable, sustainable income for life. In 2020, reaching over 130 countries, and helping over 2,500 people, we are using local skills, local materials and local bees to bring benefits for people, bees and the environment.

BfD is seeking to appoint a Treasurer (a voluntary position) to join its Board. The ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant and it would be advantageous if applicants have an interest in environmental issues. The new Treasurer will join a small energetic team who are working hard to grow BfD and will have the opportunity to advise at a strategic level as well as oversee the financial operations of the charity.

BfD has been growing, annually, for the last 5 years and is about to enter a period of transition – transferring current activities into a newly formed CIO. We are currently developing new systems and processes (using Xero) that will streamline the financial operations of the charity. We employ a qualified accountant 2 days per week who prepares the accounts. The treasurer will be required to oversee the financial activities of the charity and the minimum time commitment required is 5 hours a month.

The accounts have previously been examined, not audited although we have just reached the threshold for an audit and will be appointing new external auditors. All the Trustees collectively oversee and have legal responsibility for BfD’s governance, management and strategic development. We meet six times per year although many trustees are involved regularly on various other projects. Currently all trustee meetings are on zoom but when possible, some trustee meetings will be held in the office in Monmouth.

Person specification

  • A qualified accountant with commercial awareness and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of SORP /charity accounting
  • Motivated by the transformation of the lives of the poor and environmental issues.
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders.
  • Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Experience of working with Xero software

To apply please send a CV and covering letter to Suzie Shaw at explaining why you are interested in the position and what you think you can bring to the organisation. The closing date is 14th March 2021. Further information on Bees for Development can be found at
