Job Description

Purpose 

  • Provide guidance, supporting the operational team to utilise excellent systems and procedures 

  • Ensure compliance with best regulatory practice 

  • Support the board to make sound financial decisions based on up to date financial information, helping prepare budgets, forecasts and financial models. 

  • To help foresee challenges ahead and mitigate risks that might negatively impact the financial sustainability of the organisation. 

Context 
Three locally rooted charities in East Bristol: Up Our Street, Easton Community Centre and Felix Road Adventure Playground, have merged to become one organisation, Eastside Community Trust, aiming to make Easton and Lawrence Hill a place of possibility for everyone.  

A new board made up of members of the three existing organisation boards has formed but is looking to increase the skills and capacities relating to financial management. This is an exciting time for the organisation as it looks to implement a new vision, three-year strategy, enlarged staff team, constitution and membership structure.  

The organisation boasts a range of assets including an adventure playground, a community centre and four retail shops. It delivers a community magazine to 13,500 homes and carries out research, community development projects, events and communications aimed at promoting civic participation and improving equality of opportunities across the Easton and Lawrence Hill wards.  

Responsibilities 

  • Presenting financial reports to the board together with the CEO in a format that helps the board understand the charity’s financial position 

  • Advising the board on how to carry out its financial responsibilities 

  • Liaising with professional advisors 

  • Supporting the preparation and scrutiny of annual accounts 

  • Supporting the CEO and Finance and HR Manager with budget setting and financial forecasting, cashflow and management reporting 

  • Advising the board of financial risk and risk mitigation 

 

Person specification 

  • Strong financial background, having worked in a financial management role for 5+ years. 

  • Hold an accountancy qualification. 

  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.  

  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team. 

  • A commitment to working within the organisation’s values and principles of working. 

  • Able to attend board away days or training. These will happen once per year.
