Trustees (Finance or Legal), Unlocked Graduates
Want to help break cycles of re-offending by developing outstanding individuals to lead rehabilitation in prisons and throughout society?
Unlocked Graduates is working to break cycles of reoffending by identifying brilliant people and supporting them to spend two years working as frontline prison officers. We challenge them to come up with new ideas to improve the way prisons work across the country. The Unlocked Graduates programme was one of the key recommendations of the Coates’ Review of prison education. The report argued that education needs to be put at the heart of the prison service if Government is serious about the rehabilitation of prisoners. It also called for the creation of a new scheme to encourage graduates from top universities to work as prison officers for an initial period of two years.
Unlocked Graduates was launched in 2016 to answer this challenge. Our programme has now been running for over three years across London, the South East, West Midlands and North West of the UK.
We are now seeking to expand our board, with two additional trustees, prioritising adding skills in two areas: finance and legal. We welcome both experienced trustees and those looking to take on their first trusteeship, and we want to welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to further diversify the Board.
We are seeking someone who is passionate about being a disruptor, pushing boundaries, and testing new approaches to problems. You will need exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across the board and represent Unlocked Graduates externally, as well as a naturally highly motivated person who is excited to be part of an innovative mission-focused organisation.
We encourage applications from all ethnic backgrounds as we believe that diversity of thought and experience leads to higher performance as well as better problem solving and decision making.
The Unlocked board meets every three months for 1.5-2 hours so the executive team can present how the organisation work is going and the trustees can provide scrutiny and oversight. All board members are required to attend these meetings, either in person or remotely. Some board members also sit on subcommittees which meet up to four times a year. There are also some infrequent ad-hoc email communications and very occasional meetings in between (these are very much based around trustees’ availability).
