About the role

The Trust aims to distribute c£400,000 a year to charity, in accordance with the will of Emily Pemberton-Barnes, who died in 1943. The charities that the Trust supports are all UK based, but mostly operate in the East End of London and Essex. The Trust is gradually moving from the current distribution model to fixed-term grants to continue to support organisations that reflect the values and interests of Emily Pemberton-Barnes.

The Trust currently supports about 30 organsiations including St Dunstan’s and All Saints Church in Stepney, Church of St James and St John in Havering, Essex, Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust, The Mission to Seafarers, British and Foreign Bible Society, Liveability, CharityComms and the Lake District Calvert Trust.

The grants are funded by investment income from the estate of Emily Pemberton-Barnes, which includes a number of commercial properties throughout the UK. The Trust actively manages the property portfolio to maximise income and add value. There is a strategy in place to diversify the Trust’s investments further and to reduce the dependence of income from direct property.

Who we’re looking for

To continue to make best use of our resources and continue to support charities, we are looking to appoint new Trustees to strengthen the board. We are keen to attract a number of people with diverse skills and experiences including, but not limited to, grant-giving, experience and knowledge of Christian organisations and/or churches, legal, accounting, governance, finance and investment including commercial property. We are looking for people from different backgrounds and people who can bring different perspectives to our Board.

Trustee meetings are held in London four times a year; an annual strategy away day, with further meetings and conference calls as needed. We particularly want to build stronger relationships with our grantees and new Trustees will be an integral part of this process.

The time commitment is likely to be up to one day per month.
