Christian Aid has a vision – an end to poverty – and we believe that vision can become a reality. The essential purpose of Christian Aid is to expose the scandal of poverty, to help in practical ways to root it out from the world and to challenge the systems that favour the rich and powerful over the poor and marginalised. We are currently seeking additional Trustees to join our Board to impact our organisation's strategy, goals and direction.
If you are inspired by faith to volunteer at senior level for a leading Christian charity operating in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities in 29 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean, then this role could be the perfect role for you.
At Christian Aid, we believe that poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their lives. Your role as trustee will guide us as we work together to create impactful partnerships as a leading NGO.
Christian Aid operates through an incorporated charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales and with Companies House. There are various subsidiary and connected charities which support us.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategy and policy framework of Christian Aid, determining direction and goals; protecting and promoting the identity and values of the charity; and fulfilling our statutory responsibilities.
It collectively holds the Chief Executive and other directors (senior management) accountable, providing constructive challenge where necessary, reporting to the Sponsoring Churches at the Annual General Meeting and promoting Christian Aid externally.
The Board delegates certain functions to sub-committees of trustees. As a trustee, you will be expected to serve on at least one of the sub-committees.
It would be essential for candidates to have:
- knowledge of the governance obligations and responsibilities of Trustees
- sympathy and support for Christian Aid as a Christian organisation, which works with: churches; ecumenical bodies; local NGOs; organisations of other faiths; and movements which have common values and competence in poverty eradication. Christian Aid values diversity in its Board and welcomes people from all sections of the Christian community.
It would be desirable if candidates also had:
- knowledge of the workings of NGOs in the UK/Ireland
- knowledge of the social, cultural, economic and political dimensions of international relief and development
- experience in an international organisation
- experience and understanding of diversity, especially in the UK/Ireland context.
In this round of recruitment, we are looking for up to 6 trustees and are particularly interested in candidates with skills and experience in:
- fundraising or income generation
- humanitarian and development work
- marketing and digital experience.
The Board is especially keen to invite applications from candidates with current lived experience in the Global South and candidates who will help to ensure that the Board is fully representative of ethnic diversity across the UK.
As a trustee, you will be appointed for an initial four year term, and are eligible to be re-appointed for further terms of office, limited to a maximum of eight consecutive years.
We are open to expressions of interest from persons available to join the Board either in the second half of 2021 or from 2022 onwards.

Currently all Board meetings are held online. Usually there are four Board meetings a year, including two overnight residential meetings in the UK.

We will require a CV and Supporting Statement. Longlisted candidates will be invited to meet a selection panel in May. Thereafter, recommendations for appointment will be proposed to the Board of Trustees and formally ratified at the Annual General Meeting of Sponsoring Churches in November 2021.
