Job Description

The UK's leading Veterans housing charity, Haig Housing Trust, is looking to strengthen its board with new trustees with audit, HR or social housing experience, to help them improve the lives of Veterans and their families in need.

Role summary

Haig's trustees play a pivotal role in supporting the executive team and ensuring that we operate to the highest standards of charity governance. We are looking for new members to help us provide Veterans and their families in need with quality, affordable homes. 

As a trustee you will contribute at four board meetings, four sub-committee meetings and an offsite strategy meeting each year.  These are usually held during business hours in Central London or our head office in Morden. You will also have the opportunity to visit tenants and estates across the country. 

You will be joining the board at an exciting time for Haig as it undergoes a period of expansion and refurbishment. 

In addition to our general needs housing, we specially adapt homes for wounded ex-Service men and women. We are in an exciting period of growing and improving our 1500 homes across the UK.

Fundraising is not a significant activity for Haig as our rental income supports our day-to-day operations.

The board currently consists of nine trustees with a range of skills and experience supporting Haig's 52 professional executives and staff.

Person specification

We are looking for trustees who will:

  • Bring a range of diverse professional and real-world experience to the board
  • Have a strong empathy with the Armed Services community
  • Be articulate communicators with integrity and a strong commitment to Haig and the people we help
  • Be committed to the highest standards of charity governance.

Previous trustee experience is not necessary as we will provide support and training. We are particularly looking to enhance the board with skills & experience in one or more of the following:

  • Professional accountancy and audit experience
  • Current or recent HR experience
  • Experience in Charitable or Social housing

Time commitment

You will attend approx 2 meetings each quarter which are held during business hours in London or at Morden HQ plus ad-hoc strategy meetings/tenant visits.
