Job Title: Trustee for a training organisation providing education to disadvantaged young people

Job Description

First Rung is looking for a new trustee with a Finance background to join our board in its mission of giving a second chance in education and training for disadvantaged young people in North London and South Hertfordshire.

First Rung has over 35 years experience providing training in basic skills, vocational qualifications and work experience including traineeships and apprenticeships to young people who have missed out at school.  We are looking to expand our provision of apprenticeships in a competitive environment and to develop alternative educational provision for 14-16 year olds for whom school is not working. We are rated Grade 2 (Good) by Ofsted and aspire over time to raise this to Grade 1. We operate from centres in Ponders End, Colindale and Watford, and employ approximately 40 dedicated and enthusiastic staff.

Our income comes from frequently changing government funding schemes and a challenge is to keep abreast of these changes and ensure that we continue to use the schemes to deliver our core mission.

We are looking to refresh our Board (currently of ten trustees) by recruiting trustees committed to our vision of improving the life chances of young people, and we are particularly interested in recruiting people with a background in Finance through holding professional qualifications, suitable work or charity experience.

Experience as a trustee is not necessary as training will be given but it will help to have had some involvement in contributing to the strategic development of a business or organisation.  People from all backgrounds are welcome: we are keen to increase the diversity of the board and recruit more women and members of ethnic minorities.

You will need to be able to prepare for and attend four board meetings a year of 2-3 hours each; one full day strategic awayday and up to 4 meetings as a member of the board’s Finance & Premises subcommittee.
