Trustee for the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust
The chief object of the A. S. Hornby Educational Trust, as laid down in its Trust Deed, is to promote the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language, especially by providing scholarships and grants. Since 1961, the Trust has supported the professional development of a significant number of teachers in the Global South via individual scholarships to study on MA programmes in the UK (the ‘Hornby Scholars’ scheme), regional schools (‘Hornby Schools’) and via small-scale project funding to alumni and to Teacher Associations.

The work of the Board
We are a small group of volunteer Trustees, supported by a part-time secretary. At present there are seven trustees, but our trust deed allows us to appoint up to nine. We meet five or six times a year, usually in London. Meeting times vary but typically run from 11.00 – 16.30. In addition we hold an annual event to enable Trustees to meet the Hornby scholars and this is currently hosted by Warwick University. Trustees will also have actions to work on between meetings.
Our Trustees are unpaid, but we cover all travel expenses.
In return for your time and expertise, we offer you the experience of being part of a team that aims to make a real difference to the lives of teachers in some of the poorest countries across the world.
What we are looking for
We are looking to appoint a trustee who is able to take a lead in communicating with our auditors and has both the interest and ability to be involved in monitoring the charity's investment funds and in liaising with the fund manager. You will also have the role of working with other trustees, advising on budget planning, and providing professional input to discussion of accounts at Board meetings.
Ideally, although not essentially, we are seeking a qualified accountant who can bring this expertise to the team. We are particularly interested to hear from people with experience in the development and use of business/charity financial reporting, management accounts, budgeting & cash flow.
The Hornby Trust is now embarking on a phase of further development aimed at fine-tuning our activities to meet the needs of a world in which the role of English language and English language teaching is rapidly evolving. We are seeking to enhance our small but dedicated Board with new trustees who are enthusiastic about our mission and keen to contribute broadly to the governance of the charity.
Joining the Board will offer you an opportunity to make a significant contribution to policy formation in a context that enables you to deploy your own expertise whilst drawing on others’ experience to broaden your own perspectives.
How to Apply
If you are interested in joining us, please send a letter of interest as an e-mail attachment to the Hornby Secretary (firstname.lastname@example.org), outlining why you are interested in the role and saying what you feel you can bring to the task. The subject heading of your e-mail should read: Trustee Role
Please also provide a brief c.v. (max two sides of a page) and the names of two referees. We will not contact them without first getting your permission.
