We are looking for someone who is both good with the big picture and strategic issues and can also manage detail and undertake financial and accounting work. An excellent team member and an independent thinker.
For over 25 years, GDWG has provided practical and emotional support to people detained in two immigration removal centres at Gatwick through the work of volunteer befrienders, supported by an office team of seven people. We are committed to befriending and improving life for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Some of our beneficiaries are recent arrivals to the UK, often speaking little or no English, while others have lived here for many years or were even born here. In all cases, they are facing a hostile environment where caring and compassion are often in short supply. It is our work to reach out to them.
Our Refugee Tales project takes its inspiration from The Canterbury Tales and features walking and storytelling to call for changes and improvements to detention policy and practice. Our parliamentary work enables individuals who have lived experience of detention to speak to politicians and people of influence and to call for an end to indefinite detention.
Covid-19 has created new operational challenges for us as we work from home to help former detainees living in the community with insufficient help from other sources. Unable to meet our beneficiaries or fellow staff and volunteers in person, we have adapted into new ways of working using technology. We are prudently managed, with adequate reserves and a range of supportive funders, large and small.
We work to create a culture of inclusion and we believe that we learn better together with a diverse team. We welcome the contributions of people from any background.
The Board of Trustees, who have the ultimate responsibility for the legal and efficient running of the charity, meet four times a year with occasional extra meetings.
The Treasurer will be a qualified accountant, ideally but not necessarily with senior experience. The role requires a person who can both understand and contribute to the big picture and strategic issues and also manage detail and undertake financial and accounting work. We are looking for someone who is both an excellent team member and an independent thinker.
The main responsibilities are to:
- Oversee the financial affairs of GDWG and take the lead among trustees on governance and compliance matters
- Ensure the Charity remains financially viable
- Ensure GDWG maintains a high standard of financial control and management
- Prepare and present management accounts and other financial reports
- Work closely with the Director and other staff, trustees and volunteers (including our volunteer bookkeeper) on various topics, including the preparation of project budgets for funding applications
- Make a full contribution to the Charity as a member of the Board of Trustees
- If you would like to work with us, please download the full Role Description and Person Specification for the Treasurer. We offer a thorough induction and support. The post is voluntary but appropriate expenses are available.
Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.
