Trustee - North London Hospice

Approximately 24 days a year

This voluntary unpaid role will help us to deliver our services to ensure that people with life-limiting illnesses optimise their quality of life.

We are looking for trustees specifically with a financial accountancy background, ideally a Chartered Accountant, with an interest in the work of the charity. We are keen to encourage applicants of all ages and backgrounds to reflect the community we serve.

We’ve been caring for local people in the diverse communities across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey since 1984 and are committed to providing the highest quality palliative and end of life care for patients and families living with a life limiting illness. Not only do we take care of people’s physical needs, we look after their emotional, spiritual and social needs and provide support for their friends and family too. As well as three service bases across the boroughs we work in, we have 18 retail shops, while our annual turnover is £13 million.

As a Trustee, you’ll participate in, and be collectively responsible, for governance and strategic direction. You’ll also be able to personally contribute specific skills and knowledge for the benefit of the Hospice. This role is specifically to become a member of the Finance sub- committee with a view to potentially becoming Chair of this Committee in due course. You will also help to formulate and review our strategic aims and, in collaboration with other Trustees, ensuring that our policies and practices are up to date.

You’ll also need to be prepared to be part of a rotation in a programme of bi-annual visits to clinical service areas and act as a link person with one of our service areas and one or more of our 18 shops. . Put simply, you must want to take on the role of advisor, critical friend, be able to offer constructive challenge and be an ambassador for the Hospice, promoting and safeguarding its reputation at all times.

Our Board of Trustees meets 8 times a year with the expectation that Trustees will attend a minimum of 5 Board Meetings. There’s also an annual strategy day, occasional training sessions provided for the benefit of the Trustees and an Annual Review with the Chair of the Hospice. Accordingly, you must be willing to commit to attending these activities. In terms of experience, in addition to the areas outlined above, we would particularly welcome individuals who already have a link with one of the communities we serve, although this is not essential.

Above all, we’re looking for a passion for the work we do and a real desire to help make a difference to the lives of those with a potentially life-limiting illness who have specialist needs. We are also very keen to recruit trustees from a diverse range of backgrounds. Reasonable expenses incurred in for example in connection with external meetings or Conferences will be considered.
