Job Description

Varrier Jones Foundation manages £50m of assets (including commercial property and developable land) for the benefit of Papworth Trust and other disability charities. We are seeking a trustee with experience in land development.

The Trustee (Land Development) will be a member of the Board and of the VJF Property Committee that oversees the operational management of all of the Foundation's property assets by our retained third-party advisers.

Whilst the current work of the Committee is focused on generating income from our commercial properties, a recently completed appraisal by our property advisers has demonstrated that VJF's land holdings have significant development potential. The Property Committee will be responsible for developing a strategy to exploit this potential over the medium to long term, for recommending that strategy to the Board and for its implementation with appropriate professional advice.

What's in it for the volunteer?

VJF has a very clear objective and purpose: to manage its assets to enable the Foundation to provide long term sustainable support to Papworth Trust and other disability charities. In 2019/20 the Foundation made total donations of £1.7m to support disabled people. This is an opportunity to apply skills and experience honed in the commercial property world to a demanding charitable setting and with the challenge of ensuring that maximising asset returns doesn't undermine VJF's ability to make a sustainable level of donations (in real terms) to support disabled people over the long term. 

Time Commitment

  • Mostly during office hours.
  • Estimate of time needed: 0-5 hours / month.
  • The VJF Board meets quarterly as does the Property Committee. On average Trustees provide 8-10 days per annum for the Foundation's business.
