Friends of Portland Works FoPW) is a registered charity formed in 2015 to support the renovation of the works and its educational activities. It is the site of the first commercial application of stainless steel (1914) and so is one of Sheffield's most important historic industrial buildings. Today it houses about 35 small businesses employing about 50 people. The whole project is volunteer-led, informal but business-like. FoPW aims to help to finance some of the on-going restoration needed after 50 years of neglect to ensure the building can continue to offer low-cost workshop space.
One of our six trustees is an accountant who has ensured we follow the rules, present our annual reports professionally, etc. Earlier this year he started a new job away from the area, which has made it difficult for him to be involved, so we need a replacement.
We meet about six times a year, usually in the evening at one of the trustees' homes. We get income from grants, donations and attending fairs and other events. Income has been around £10,000 a year.
