Reach volunteering is working with Abbeyfield Tamar House in the recruitment of new Trustees to join their board. We are seeking enthusiastic motivated individuals, passionate about providing excellent care for the elderly and who are actively involved in corporate or community networks within the Plymouth area. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have experience in Governance, HR, Finance, Dementia Care or Health & Social Care in order to enhance our existing board.

Abbeyfield Tamar Extra Care Society is a ‘not for profit’ charity affiliated to The Abbeyfield Society.  It is a purpose built, 24 hour care residential home situated near Derriford Hospital, on the outskirts of the city of Plymouth.  We currently have 28 rooms but have recently applied to extend the home to provide specialist dementia care, of which there is a great demand for within the city, by building a further 12 rooms.

Role Purpose

  • To agree and regularly monitor the Society’s strategic direction and ensure that it pursues it objectives in keeping with this
  • To actively contribute in giving firm strategic direction to the Society – setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets, evaluating performance against those targets
  • To make sound commercial decisions on the future of the Society which are aligned with market demand
  • With other Trustees, ensure that the organisation functions within the legal, charitable and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strive to achieve best practice
  • To act in the interests of the Society and to adhere to the overall national Abbeyfield standards such as the Gold Star accreditation or equivalent
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Society
  • To ensure the financial stability of the Society and the proper investment of funds
  • To create a professional staffing structure in each society which supports the business
  • To use a range of skills, knowledge and experience to help reach sound decisions. This could include investment of legacy funds or surplus, scrutiny of proposals, leading and initiating debate, providing advice or guidance on new initiatives, making investment decisions or marketing the society to the wider community

Time Commitment and Location

The board currently meets once a month in Plymouth although this may change to bi-monthly in the near future.
