Birmingham LGBT is a dynamic award winning charity which delivers services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.
Our vision is a vibrant, diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community in Birmingham, in which individuals can realise their full potential and have equal access to what the city has to offer.
You will be joining a committed board who have overseen a period of rapid and ongoing organisational growth and who gain great satisfaction from helping to shape the strategic direction of this thriving and vibrant organisation.
- To ensure that the organisation promotes its charitable objects and complies with its governing instruments and with relevant law and regulations.
- To safeguard the organisation’s good name and values.
- To give strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and targets, and evaluating performance against these.
- To ensure that the organisation is run effectively and efficiently and applies its resources exclusively in furtherance of its objects.
- To ensure financial stability, good management and stewardship of property, competent investment of funds and proper accounting.
- Prior experience of committee/trustee work.
- An understanding of the UK charity sector, good governance, Charity Commission, Companies House requirements, relevant legislations and statutory requirements.
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship.
- Commitment to the charity’s objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities.
- Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.
- Balancing tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise.
- Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation.
- A wider involvement with the voluntary sector.
- Leadership skills exercised through a period change.
Our current Board is not sufficiently reflective of the diversity of the people and the communities we exist to serve. We are keen to take a step towards changing this and are particularly interested in applications from Black and ethnic minority candidates and those from a younger demographic.
- The board meets quarterly in the evening – two hours approximately.
- You will be a member of a sub-committee which will also meet quarterly.
