Poet in the City is a leading producer of poetry shows, community commissions and talent development. We listen to the stories that matter to communities and transform these into theatrical and adventurous poetry productions in arts venues and everyday spaces. We create local networks and creative teams, leaving a legacy for cultural development and skills, and locally relevant work. Our trailblazing approach to producing live poetry is complemented by a sector-leading young producers programme.
We are at a pivotal moment for the charity as we expand our work with public libraries, and deepen our relationships with the creative networks we have built in places across the country. We are getting ready to scale up, to produce bigger and more ambitious work outdoors, in everyday spaces and arts venues, to meet the growing needs of artists and communities to share their stories.
What to Expect / Roles & Responsibilities
Our board is currently made up of seven individuals, working to support the small and dedicated staff team to set and deliver the charity’s vision. All trustees share responsibility for the organisation as a whole, including the standard responsibilities set out by the Charity Commission, but also take specific oversight to suit their backgrounds, experience and interests.
Trustees’ responsibilities are:
- To be advocates for Poet in the City’s mission
- To pursue best practice in governance
- To provide guidance to the management’s decisions
Trustees meet quarterly, with a yearly strategy meeting, and are all expected to attend Poet in the City events and fundraisers throughout the year.
To support us in the next stage of our journey, we are particularly seeking candidates with expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Financial – to bring additional financial acumen to the board to support assurance, financial planning and their impact on the wider work of the charity
- Fundraising – to bring an understanding of the fundraising ecology to the board in order to support and develop the diversity of active funding streams; this person may not be a professional fundraiser, or a networked donor, but may come from a connected background such as a grant-making organisation
- Digital development – to bring direct experience of using digital technologies to create new opportunities, from audience engagement to revenue generation
- Outdoor arts – to bring direct experience of working at a large scale in the public realm, from mass participation events to in-depth community engagement
- Social activism – to bring direct experience of community collaboration work, making change at a grassroots and policy level
- Libraries – to bring direct experience of working in the public library sector
