For over 24 years, Setpoint London East (Setpoint) has inspired primary school students in East London in science, technology, engineering & maths (STEM) subjects through entertaining hands-on workshops. It is committed to introducing students to nature & enthusing them to pursue a STEM subjects in further education through workshops held in schools, at the Soanes Centre & in the surrounding Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. It is a small charity with a big reach; pre-pandemic around 7,000 students per year benefited from our workshops.
Who are we looking for:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Setpoint Board of Trustees to provide strategic direction & help rebuild & find new ways of working following the pandemic.
We are looking for THREE trustees to replace those that are stepping down at the end of their mandates. We are keen to receive applications from people with some of the following areas of knowledge:
- STEM: knowledge & experience of STEM education & policy developments, how primary STEM learning feeds into secondary & further education, or how STEM subjects are used in the workplace
- Fundraising: ability to network with potential funders& increase awareness of the charity & its goals
- Treasurer/Finance: building business models & translating strategies into financial forecasts
If you do not have these skills but believe your expertise could be useful to us & are interested in joining the Board, we still want to hear from you. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, whether you are an experienced trustee or this is your first role. We expect you to be involved in our charity’s future, engaging in meeting the challenges facing STEM education & the charity more broadly. The role is voluntary with no salary attached.

- Ensuring an effective business plan & budget is in place & that the charity remains financially viable
- Forming & updating key charity policies & approving these & other matters for the Board
- Ensuring the Board fulfils its duties for governance of the organisation, including meeting its charitable objectives
- Understanding the challenges faced as a small organisation & driving forward income growth in a sustainable way
Core Skills required:
- Commitment to the values of the charity with an ability to identify & address challenges
- Strategic thinking and ability to manage risks to longer term viability
- Independent problem solver with the confidence to question & challenge
- Ability to engage with other Trustees & stakeholders to drive the organisation forward
- Networking skills when representing the charity
- Development of ideas to improve resilience (financial and operational)
- Providing business models & cash flow forecasts, translating strategy into numbers, and monitoring management accounts (Treasurer role)
- Communicating with accountants regarding the accounts & other matters arising that require their input (Treasurer role)
Additional desirable skills:
- Knowledge of the charity sector with regard to education & measuring its impact
- Comfort with technology to help improve systems & enhance our social media presence
- Understanding of the STEM education sector & how primary level education feeds through to achievement at the secondary & further education levels (STEM role)
- Ability to engage with local businesses, universities or other stakeholders with an interest in STEM and the workplace (STEM role)
- Experience with fundraising & understanding of how to structure projects to appeal to funders (Fundraising role)
- Ability to build business models & financial plans and forecasts (Treasurer role)
- Knowledge of financial accounting & reporting procedures & willingness to understand the charity SORP framework (Treasurer role)
- Ability to communicate financial information to those with little financial background (Treasurer role)
Trustees are expected to attend Board meetings; under normal operations, these occur four times per year at the Soanes Centre in Tower Hamlets but during the pandemic they have been held once per month via video conference. On average, they last 1-2 hours.
In addition, there is time required to prepare for Board meetings, carry out specific duties relevant to your expertise & also general statutory duties as Trustees. This can be expected to take around one day per month.
Trustee appointments are for an initial 2 year period, renewable by mutual agreement.
