The British Racing School [BRS] is an educational charity. The BRS is based in Newmarket but we provide education to those working in the horseracing industry across the UK and internationally.
Our Charitable Objectives are:
1. To provide education and training of the highest possible standard for those employed in or seeking employment in the horse racing industry.
2. To provide initiatives involving horses and/or ponies, whether autonomously or in association with community groups, charities and/or schools, with a view to promoting community cohesion and mental health and so as to support, in particular, those experiencing poor physical or mental health, social isolation and/or anti-social behaviour.
3. To use interaction with horses and ponies as a mechanism to deliver specific projects, particularly but not exclusively, for children and young people designed to build self-confidence, improve communication skills, increase aspiration and enhance employment potential.
The BRS is looking to increase the diversity of its Trustee Board with the appointment of an ethnic minority Trustee, in order that the Board better reflects the Charity’s beneficiaries and to realise the benefits that diverse leadership brings.
In addition, the Board wishes to increase the level of gender diversity and is therefore looking to appoint more female Trustees to the Board.
In order to complement the current Trustee skills profile the BRS is looking to recruit Trustees with the following skills and experience;
• Accounting and Finance
• Current employment experience in a racing yard or stud
For the fundraising and accounting/finance roles, knowledge of horses and horseracing is not essential but a genuine interest in improving the life chances of young people through education and training is. In addition the BRS Board is looking for Trustees who can think strategically about the BRS activities and leverage their own insights and experience for the benefit of the Board and the management team.
Current or previous Trustee experience is not a prerequisite and the current Board is happy to support newly appointed Trustees with Trustee training and insights from their own experiences.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to add value outside of their natural areas of expertise and the motivation to effectively contribute to the BRS.
Personal qualities are important to the BRS – the successful candidate will be pragmatic, humble and intellectually curious with sound people judgement, high emotional intelligence and strong listening skills. It is critical that the successful candidate possesses an open and collaborative style able to fit the culture of a low ego but effective Board.
This is voluntary position, we will reimburse travel expenses to approximately 5 meeting per annum.
Safeguarding our young people is a priority, the successful applicant will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and provide the names of two contacts who can be approached to provide a professional reference.
