Trustee Vacancies at The Welcome Centre
Who we are
The Welcome Centre is a large, independent food bank in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. We’re one of the largest food banks in the north of England. We have a team of six staff working across two sites, supported by 100 volunteers.
Each year we support thousands of people in crisis in our community. Everyone we support is referred to us from one of our frontline partner agencies, and once people are referred to us, we provide practical support including food, toiletries, and other essential items.
We also offer people one to one advocacy, guidance and support to help them address any underlying or ongoing issues, which might prevent them getting back on their feet.
You can find out more about The Welcome Centre at www.thewelcomecentre.org.
We are particularly proud of our work this year. The challenges posed by Covid-19 have been immense, but with great support from the council, our partners, and our in-house team we have continued to operate and provide much needed support for large numbers of families and individuals during these difficult times.
Our Board of Trustees
Our Board is made up of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. Together we set out the overall strategy, monitor progress against our targets and objectives and ensure that The Welcome Centre operates on a financially sound basis.
Trustees attend four meetings per year (usually held on Monday evenings), as well as an annual strategy day and our AGM. In addition, most of us serve on one of four subgroups, which cover finance and operations, marketing, HR and volunteering, and our Advocacy, Guidance and Support service. Most of us also take responsibility for particular areas of governance. In addition we encourage trustees to volunteer at the centre or the warehouse in order to maintain a good understanding of what we do.
We currently have two vacancies and would welcome applications from individuals who would like to be a part of our team of trustees. The key criterion is to have empathy with our aims and objectives. However, we would be particularly interested in candidates who have financial experience and expertise. We are also looking to develop a balance in terms of age and ethnicity within the board. We would particularly welcome applications from younger people and candidates from an ethnic minority background.
You do not have to know everything. We will provide training, induction and support as well as a lively and stimulating environment and the opportunity to make a difference. Above all we are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals.
