We have a vision at Alexander Rose Charity: for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food. Our mission is to give families access to fresh fruit and vegetables in their communities. Through our Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project we’ve created an innovative response to tackle the problem of food poverty and unhealthy diets in the UK. We work across four London Boroughs plus Liverpool and Barnsley, (with a 7th project due to launch in Glasgow in 2020) supporting well over 1,200 young families every week.
We are now looking for new trustees to help drive this forward and provide support and strategic guidance to the CEO and the executive team.
What does the role involve?
We're looking for trustees who have the knowledge, skills, and passion to take a successful concept and turn it into a national movement for the improvement of the UK's food system. We've designed our own bespoke digital platform that supports the distribution and reimbursement of vouchers for families, children's centres and retailers. We've been nominated for awards and received national recognition for our use of tech for good. At the same time we've generated income from local authorities, trusts & foundations, corporates & individuals but our challenge now is grow and diversify our funding base to meet the ambitions set out in our new Five Year Strategy.
We're look for individuals who understand what it takes to scale an enterprise, how to get the best out of new technologies, and the role that marketing & communications play in driving success.
Who will be suited to the role?
We’ve recently published a new five-year strategy for the Charity that charts the development & expansion of our work so we can support a greater number of families in more locations around the country. We’re now looking to recruit new trustees to help us drive forward this work. We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with skills, knowledge and connections in the following fields:
- Digital innovation
- Marketing and communications
- Senior leadership experience in the voluntary sector
We particularly welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. Although our board meetings take place in London, we welcome applications from across the UK – especially from the communities we currently serve.
What difference will you make?
The UK’s food system is broken with rising levels of food poverty and the reality that it is cheaper for parents to feed their children on unhealthy food than healthy food. At Alexandra Rose our vision is for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food and our mission is to give families access to fresh fruit and vegetables in their communities. To deliver this mission we have three mutually reinforcing objectives:
- Giving families on low incomes access to fresh fruit & vegetables
- Supporting healthy food economies in local areas
- Advocating for access to healthy food for all through an improved food system.
Working alongside the CEO and staff you’ll provide strong leadership and ensure the Charity complies with all relevant laws and regulations, is financially stable and properly manages its resources and funding.

After 5 years of piloting and developing our new mission the project work is ready to take the next step, to grow and expand to support even more families in need while using the evidence of our impact to advocate for an improved food system for all. As a trustee you’ll play a key role in driving forward our new five-year strategy and helping a charity with a distinguished legacy, to chart its future addressing a very timely and modern issue.
You'll be joining a Board of 7 other committed trustees with a diverse range of skills. The Board meets four times per year at the central London offices of one of your fellow trustees. You will be expected to join one of Sub Groups - Finance or Operations - which also meet four times per year.
We will invite applicants who meet the criteria we are looking for to a face to face interview in London towards the end of March or early April. We will reimburse any travel expenses but if it is not possible to attend in person the interview may take place using conferencing facilities.
