Job Description

Reach Volunteering are working with The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust who is seeking a trustee to join their Board.

We have recently set out an ambitious vision for the next 25 years. To help us fulfil these ambitions, we are looking for new, experienced and committed Trustees to play an essential role in the governance and development of the charity.

This is a rare opportunity to participate in the development of an international conservation charity, and become part of an organisation with over 70 years of pioneering conservation history. With over 1,000,000 visitors to our wetland sites every year, and 3,000 hectares of internationally important wetlands managed by WWT, we are a unique charity carrying out vital conservation work around the world. As a trustee you will plan an instrumental role in the governance and future development of WWT, and get the chance to visit our wetland sites and experience our conservation work firsthand.

Role Summary

We are seeking Trustees with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Wetland conservation
  • Communications and media
  • Inspiring education and engagement

You need not have been a charity trustee before, but you will have experience of participating at a senior level.

Together with the other Trustees on the Council, you will have ultimate responsibility for the strategic direction of the charity and for ensuring WWT is effectively delivering wetland conservation. You will ensure WWT complies with charity law and is well-run.

You will be willing and able to travel to WWT’s sites around the UK for the quarterly meetings. This position is entirely voluntary and is therefore unpaid. Full travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed and applications from across the UK are welcome.

We are also looking for expert advisors for the Trading board and would like to hear from you if you have significant experience in improving results in commercial operations particularly retail, catering and visitor attractions.

Person Specification

We are looking for people with skills and experience at a senior level in one or more of the following:

  • Successful delivery of on-the-ground conservation
  • Inspiring education and engagement
  • Improving results in commercial operations particularly retail, catering and visitor attractions
  • Achieving results in fundraising and marketing
  • Able to follow and participate in complex discussions and make pragmatic decisions.

To be appointed as a Trustee you cannot have been disqualified from acting as a charity trustee or serving as a company director, been convicted of dishonesty or fraud or be an undischarged bankrupt.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying, please forward your CV together with a one-page covering letter setting out which of the above roles you are interested in and why to Sam Hodgkinson, Volunteering Administration via Reach Volunteering by the closing date of 27 July 2019.

Candidates will be short-listed based on the required skills and experience listed above, and interviews will be held in late September.
