User Voice has grown rapidly since Mark Johnson MBE founded our organisation in 2009. We were created for and run by people who have been in prison and on probation. 85% of our staff have lived experience. Lived experience means we engage empathetically instead of sympathetically.
We exist to reduce offending and improve rehabilitation by working with the most marginalised people in and around the criminal justice system. We ensure that practitioners and policymakers hear their voices.
We are led by ex-offenders and are committed to ensuring the criminal justice system works for everyone. We bring change for institutions, individuals, and the agenda – by putting users at the heart everything for example, through our User Voice Councils who give decisions makers feedback and solutions. In 2020 User Voice had representative structures for 1 in 3 people in the criminal justice system including 64% on probation, and 17% of people in prison through our Council model. We have found through our research and evaluation that probation areas with a Service User Council have on average a lower reoffending rate than those without Councils.
Who we are looking for:
User Voice is entering a period of growth and we are strengthening our operational and financial footing, we are also entering an exciting strategic period as we are now in a unique position in being able to access, obtain and broadcast authentic insights from people who often struggle to find a voice.
As a growing organisation we are looking to appoint a new treasurer with a range of skills and experiences including strategic finance, growing and developing organisations, someone who is dynamic in a commercially astute way and passionate about social justice. We are looking for a financially qualified person who shares our values and can support, challenge, and advise us on our strategic direction. You will support our executive team and help develop better financial insight for fellow board members.
The board meets quarterly for 3 hours (currently virtually), with four Finance sub-committee meetings a year and the treasurer will attend audit meetings. We expect the time commitment for the Treasurer to be up to a day a month. This will include ad hoc phone calls and meetings for consultation, reading board papers and visiting our work when this is safe to do.
