Join our Trustee Board – Energy Sparks Treasurer Role
Do you want to make a difference in the fight against climate change?
We are seeking a volunteer Treasurer to join the board of Energy Sparks, a charity helping young people to reduce their school’s carbon footprint. Our trustees set the vision for Energy Sparks' operations, set our policies and strategic direction, define our goals, set targets and evaluate our performance. Our trustees also monitor the financial position of the organisation, ensuring that we operate within our means and objects, and that there are clear lines of accountability for day-to-day financial and operational management.
Energy Sparks (https://energysparks.uk/) is an online energy analysis tool and energy education programme specifically designed to help schools reduce their electricity and gas usage through the analysis of smart meter data. Energy Sparks helps pupils and the wider school community to reduce their school’s carbon emissions, and make a real contribution to addressing the 'climate emergency'.
Energy Sparks is a registered charity working for the public benefit to develop and promote tools, services and programmes to reduce energy and resource consumption and carbon emissions. Energy Sparks aims to educate the public, particularly young people about the causes and impacts of climate change, and the importance of energy saving and reducing carbon emissions.
Energy Sparks started in 2017 in Bath, and is currently working with 175 schools across the UK. Energy Sparks received significant development funding from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to develop our school-specific energy analysis tool and have now secured a 3 year funding contract from the OVO Foundation to extend our work to 350 schools over 3 years., with additional funding awarded from other trusts and foundations.
As the headteacher of one of our participating schools said:
'Energy Sparks has enabled children at Freshford to investigate how energy is used in different parts of the school and devise strategies to reduce the school's consumption. The children's enthusiasm was kick-started by the competitive element and they’ve worked effectively with staff and the local community to think innovatively about what we can do to reduce our impact on the environment and reduce costs. The children developed and presented evidence-based initiatives to the school's business managers, securing installation of energy-efficient lighting and kitchen equipment, movement-sensor-switches, and a solar-panel campaign.
The Energy Sparks resources are inspirational, powerful and transformational tools for all schools that will enable them to reduce their CO2 footprint, save money and help children to develop a powerful can-do attitude towards the challenges of global warming.'
Treasurer Role - What are we looking for?
- Commitment to the aims, principles and policies of Energy Sparks.
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept your responsibilities and liabilities as a Trustee and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- To provide general financial oversight of our charity
- Work with the CEO to oversee budgets, accounts and financial statements to be presented to the trustees, funders and the Charity Commission
- Monitor financial systems and controls
- Ensure that record-keeping and accounts meet the conditions of funders or statutory bodies
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
- Act as a signatory on our bank account approving payroll and other payments
Contribute to full trustee meetings taking place 4 times a year (approximately 2 hours per meeting) and the Finance committee also meeting 4 times a year. A further 2 hours per month additional commitment is required for general financial oversight and payment approval.
Day to day accounting and payroll is fulfilled by our CEO, so the Treasurer will only need to provide oversight rather than day to day book keeping.

Most work can be carried out virtually, but we would like the Treasurer to attend some in person meetings with the CEO and other trustees. These will be held in the Bath area.
