Refugee Employment Network (REN) is a charity with a strong and growing membership of 180+ people, representing 80+ refugee integration and supporting organisations from across the UK. Across our membership, we are working with a minimum of 10,000 refugees each year (around 15% of the total UK refugee workforce).
In January 2018, a small group of 15 delivery charities met in London to discuss some of the common challenges they were facing and how collaboration could support them. From this, REN was born and in January 2019 the network formally launched with a summit attended by over 80 organisations and a renewed mandate to drive collaboration between organisations offering livelihood assistance for refugees in the UK. We have been incubated by World Jewish Relief over the last 18 months and have grown from a seed of an idea and now we are currently spinning out to be an independent charity.
We recognise that whilst the UK has welcomed over 300,000 refugees, only half of them have gained access to employment. This is despite experience and skills levels that are comparable to the UK labour market. Our network brings together candidates, support organisations, public sector bodies and private sector employers to turbo-charge how we provide opportunities to refugees.
Together with NGOs, local authorities, private businesses, the Home Office and UNHCR we are brokering opportunities, developing best practice, providing advice and guidance and leverages resources and support. By doing this, our aim in the next five years is to reduce the numbers of refugees who are not in employment by removing the financial, cultural, and social barriers that stop people’s lives moving forward in the UK.
We have secured “start-up” funding from the Home Office, hosted several Business Roundtables with organisations such as Business in the Community and Movement Into Work. We have partnered with the DWP to signpost support for refugees and we have collated a range of national data, best practice and case studies that will help others expand opportunities.
We are looking to appoint a treasurer. We are keen to ensure our board is diverse and represents our whole society therefore we are particularly interested in receiving applications from people from a range of backgrounds, people with lived experience and first-time trustees.
We are looking for someone with experience in strategic finance who can support us as we become an independent charity. All of our trustees will have a passion for the work REN does and for supporting refugees. As we grow our charity and create our strategy, we are looking for a treasurer who can support us with setting our overall vision and strategy, can think creatively, bring shrewd, independent judgement, and help us build cooperative strong relationships.
The board meets remotely four times a year, and we expect the time commitment for trustees to be circa one day per month. This will include ad hoc phone calls and meetings for consultation, reading board papers and visiting projects when this is safe to do. Times and dates of meetings will be agreed on once trustees have been appointed.
