The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the 8th largest charity in the UK and over the last 196 years it has saved over 140,00 lives at sea (22 people a day in 2015).  The charity has 238 lifeboat stations, operates 444 lifeboats, their lifeguards operate on more than 200 beaches and it benefits from 40,000 volunteers.  More than 6,000 children a week are spoken to by education volunteers about sea and beach safety.

At this exciting time, as it approaches its 200th Anniversary, the RNLI is keen to recruit a Treasurer Designate, who will transition into the Treasurer role, and become a Trustee, when the current Treasurer’s term expires in July 2022.  This is a pivotal position and potential candidates will bring their expertise and knowledge to the role and should evidence a combination of the following attributes and experience:

  • A qualified accountant with high-level experience of budgeting, financial controls, management accounts and financial statements.
  • Non-executive or executive board level experience.
  • Experience of sitting on committees and chairing senior level meetings.
  • Experience of long-term financial and strategic planning, and identification and monitoring of KPls.
  • Ability to assess key financial risks and matching mitigation.
  • Knowledge of investment strategies and corporate pensions (DC and DB schemes).
  • Low ego with strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills.

Ability to demonstrate a commitment to D&I.

The Treasurer Designate will act as an Ambassador for the RNLI and will embody its values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless and dependable) and help the RNLI work towards its goal of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024.  This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using its expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.

The Trustee Board meets four times a year and twice yearly with the Executive Team to discuss the RNLI’s strategic direction.  The time commitment is approximately 25+ days a year.  As a Trustee, the Treasurer will contribute to the strategic direction of the RNLI and provide challenge to the CFO and Audit and Risk Committee.  The Treasurer will Chair the Finance Committee and attend the Investment and Pension Committees.  Committee meetings take place in London, Poole and, increasingly, are being held remotely to reduce the need to travel.

This is an unpaid voluntary opportunity within the RNLI.  Travel and subsistence costs will be reimbursed in line with RNLI policy.

The RNLI is committed to respecting and valuing diversity of background, skills and perspectives within its teams, which it considers essential in helping deliver a world-class lifesaving service.  The RNLI is an inclusive organisation and welcomes applications from everyone irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.  In making this appointment, the RNLI is seeking to enhance the diversity of its Trustee Board.

The closing date for the role is 20 June 2021.

Panel interviews are anticipated to take place on 7 and 8 July.

To apply, please submit a copy of your CV with a covering letter demonstrating your interest in and suitability for the role to RNLI@sapphirepartners.co.uk.
