Job Description

Southside Community Education Centre (SSCC), based at  117 Nicolson Street Edinburgh, is a Registered Charity (SCO12864) with the stated aims of the advancement of education, the advancement of citizenship or community development, the provision of recreational facilities or the organisation of recreational activities, with the object of improving the conditions of life for persons of all age groups and ethnicity within the community. The role of Treasurer involves being a Trustee of the Charity

The Management Committee of the SSCC lease the building from Edinburgh City Council who are responsible for maintaining the building and rent out rooms to groups and individuals for a wide range of courses and one-off events. Income from more commercial type events is used to support community based use of the premises and also to pay for general upgrading work.

After major changes in the structure of the Council, it is time for the Management Committee to plan for a new future and we need an active forward thinking finance professional to join the Committee and assist with this. Much of the day to day bookkeeping work is done by admin staff employed by the Council and the Treasurer is responsible for producing monthly statements for the Committee and ensuring that the Annual Accounts are produced in time for the AGM and Annual Report and submitting this to OSCR. Committee Meetings are held monthly and there may be other meetings which the Treasurer could usefully contribute to.

The SSCC has significant financial reserves and, at present, operates with an annual surplus. In the changing environment, it is time to consider how the reserves and surplus could be best invested to bring maximum benefit to the Community Centre.
