Background - African Bird Club Treasurer

The African Bird Club is a UK registered charity which is managed on a voluntary basis by a Council of trustees. The Club was formed in 1994 following a proposal by a number of people with a common interest in African ornithology.

About a quarter of the world's bird species, more than 2500, have been recorded in this region, with 332 included on BirdLife International’s Red Data species list for 2011, the most recent summary of the world's threatened and near-threatened species.

The aims of the Club are to:

  • provide a worldwide focus for African ornithology

  • raise money to support conservation projects in Africa through the Conservation Fund

  • encourage an interest in the conservation of the birds of the region

  • liaise with and promote the work of existing regional societies

  • publish a twice-yearly colour bulletin

  • encourage observers to visit lesser known areas of the region, and search for and study globally threatened and near-threatened species.

    Join our Board as Treasurer and help us in our mission to an promote interest in and the conservation of Africa’s birds.

    Main Purpose

The principal responsibility is to protect the financial assets of the African Bird  Club reporting to Council as required and prepare the financial accounts for approval of the members at AGM and filing those accounts with the Charity Commissioner.


  1. Maintain the ABC’s three accounts – the principal account, the savings account and the Paypal account

  2. Undertake a range of regular banking tasks in particular:

  3. Reviewing bank statements on a regular basis and follow up on any discrepancies

  4. Management of direct debits

  5. Assisting Membership Secretary with other tasks esp following up on members not renewing

  6. Undergo annual compliance, data and security checks

  7. Pay invoices as necessary in particular to staff, contractors and council (where expenses claimed)

  8. Provide floats for events and post event banking and accounts

  9. Prepare annual accounts prior to the AGM and file with the Charity Commissioners once finalised

  10. Manage our relationships with the Charity Commissioners

  11. Manage annual invoicing system for our corporate sponsors

  12. Manage the banking of donations – both committed and uncommitted funds and the payment of any conservation awards or other grants provided by ABC

  13. Manage specific details of accounts of notable major donors and supporters

  14. Attend Council meetings and the AGM in order to present financial reports and accounts

  15. Assist with other ABC duties where possible

Essential skills

  • Significant effective financial experience, ideally at Board level, in a similar organisation

  • Proven strategic thinking ability combined with the ability to process detail

  • Ability to build relationships with members, donors and institutions

  • Ability to devote the necessary time and effort needed for this role

  • The ability to operate impartially and objectively

  • Excellent communication skills and able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy

  • A willingness to demonstrate commitment to ABC’s objectives and activities

    Desirable skills

  • Experience and understanding of the responsibilities of charity trustees

  • Interest in Africa’s birds and cons ervation challenges

    What’s in it for the Volunteer?

    The role will make a key contribution to a small, enthusiastic conservation group committed to furthering interest in and conservation of African birds.  The role is critical to ensuring the organisations future sustainability and its good governance and reputation. There will be opportunities to meet other volunteers and members and get involved in the wider work of the group.

    Time Commitment

    Three Board meetings a year and one AGM, all in London.  Probably a few hours a week on average undertaking tasks.  All Council members are encouraged to help with other ABC activities in particular our participation at the annual August BirdFair at Rutland Water
