Job Purpose: Work closely with the Chief Executive and Finance Director to monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation, ensuring the financial affairs of the charity are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.

Salary: This is a voluntary role on the Board of Trustees and that no remuneration is available.

The Charity

MapAction is a leading humanitarian mapping charity. It deploys skilled volunteers to international humanitarian emergencies to map priority needs. This mapped information helps responders target their response effectively, contributing to saving lives and minimising suffering.

MapAction has built a strong reputation in the humanitarian sector and is a technical partner of the United Nations. Much of that reputation is based on the well honed procedures and capabilities that the organisation has developed in the production of static and digital GIS products for humanitarian responders.

Turnover is approximately £1m per annum (2017: £1,097) across restricted and unrestricted funding streams.

The charity is a membership organisation and has a staff team of 18 (14.4FTE) with 82 volunteers.

Summary of Role

The Treasurer delivers a critical role as part of MapAction’s Board of Trustees, working closely with the Chief Executive and Finance Director to monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation and ensuring the financial affairs of the charity are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.

The role requires attendance at:

  • Quarterly Board meetings (alternating between MapAction offices and London).

  • Annual General Meeting.

  • Regular (at least quarterly) finance meetings with Chief Executive and Finance Director (MapAction offices).

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Management

  • Ensure that MapAction operates in accordance with its charitable objects.

  • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.

  • Ensure MapAction remains financially viable.

  • Ensure that the financial resources of MapAction meets its present and future needs and that MapAction has an appropriate reserves policy.

  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, in particular for the control and allocation of restricted donor funds.

  • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports, returns, accounts and audits

  • Ensure proper auditable financial records are maintained.

  • Ensure the accounts are audited in the manner prescribed by the Charity Commission and that any recommendations from the external audit are implemented.

  • Contribute to strategic planning and fundraising strategies.

  • Work with the Chief Executive and Finance Director to set and monitor the budget and business plan.

  • Liaise with staff, volunteers and trustees about financial matters, advising on the financial implications of MapAction’s strategic plan.

  • Guide any professional advisers appointed by the Board of Trustees.

    Reporting

  • Support staff to prepare and present budgets, management accounts and annual financial statements in accordance with the charity SORP.

  • Ensure financial reports are provided to trustees in an easy to understand format.

  • Keep the Board of Trustees informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.

  • Make formal presentation of the annual financial statements at the Annual General Meeting in an easily understandable way.

  • Ensure annual returns are prepared and submitted to the Charity Commission and Companies House.

  • Good financial analysis skills (E)

  • Ability to communicate clearly (E)

  • Fully qualified accountant (E)

  • Knowledge of the charity commission accounting standards (SORP) and experience of preparing charity accounts (D)

  • Experience of control and allocation of restricted and unrestricted donor funds (E)

  • Knowledge of company law, charity law and Charity Commission legislation (D)

  • Business planning and investment skills (D)

  • Understanding of financial controls, systems and procedures, spreadsheet skills and XERO or similar accounting system (E)

  • Experience of social investment projects (D)

  • Experience of examining and the financial implications of business decisions and making appropriate recommendations (E)

  • Experience of project appraisal and fundraising from a financial perspective (D)
