Job Description

About Agents of Change

Established in 1990, Agents of Change is a UK based charity working in Romania with people with special needs, primarily those with psychiatric problems. Our mission statement is “enabling people through health education and training”. We seek to empower people and each other in situations and countries where developmental skills and opportunities are lacking. Our work centres on those living in institutions such as hospitals, recuperation centres and psychiatric units, as well as with those families isolated and managing their relatives with special needs in the community.

We are looking for a Treasurer to join our small board of Trustees which meets 4-5 times each year and maintains contact between meetings through e-mail and telephone.

What will you be doing?

The charity is supported by a loyal group of supporters, many of whom give small monthly amounts or organise special fundraising events such as craft fairs and table top sales. All funds raised are transferred to the sister charity in Romania which employs local staff. The UK charity is entering a new phase of its life as the founder Alison Butcher seeks to find people to continue her work. A significant shift in the fundraising strategy is contemplated, based on seeking the support of younger expatriate Romanians seeking to make a difference in their home country. The overall financial management of the charity needs to be put on a more efficient basis, freeing up Alison’s time for the advocacy work which is her strength.

You will be helping the Agents of Change trustees to take the charity into the next decade by:

  • reviewing the charity’s financial performance
  • advising the board on how to carry out its financial responsibilities
  • overseeing the preparation and scrutiny of annual accounts
  • preparing an annual budget for adoption by the board
  • ensuring that the charity has robust and effective financial controls in place
  • liaising with the charity’s independent examiner.

What are we looking for?

You will have an understanding of the charity sector, be well organised and reliable, possess professional finance experience, and have the ability to explain financial matters to non-financial members of the Board in a way that enables understanding. Although you do not need to be able to speak Romanian or to have visited the country, it will be important to have empathy with the people who, during the Ceausescu era, were abandoned in the care of institutions for decades. You will have a commitment to building community given that some of our work is community-based.

What difference will you make?

We are seeking someone with a desire to make a difference for an overlooked section of society in a misunderstood part of the world. The small Romanian charity whose sole funder is Agents of Change UK are regularly reaching hundreds of people each year who would otherwise lack social contact and basic human relationships.
