Freedom from Torture (FfT – formerly known as The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture) is the only registered charity in the UK dedicated to the care of torture survivors.  Set up in 1985, we currently work in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Yorks and Humber, Newcastle and Glasgow; have around 120 staff and an annual fund-raised income of around £7 million.

We want to recruit a high calibre finance professional to our small, committed Board of Trustees (for at least a three year term), for duties carried out mainly in North London. We do not pay Trustees at FfT but we do cover expenses.

The work is highly rewarding. You will work with others on the Board and staff who have a shared belief, shared values, and commitment to achieve our vision of rehabilitation for survivors and a world without torture.

Our clients come from about 100 countries, many from Sri Lanka, the DRC, Sudan and Iran. The FfT’s paid and volunteer staff offer medical consultation, examination and forensic documentation of injuries, psychological treatment and support, legal and practical help. 

We also undertake research and aim to educate the public and decision makers about torture and its impact. Our advocacy is principally directed to ensure the UK honours its international duties towards survivors of torture, including those who are asylum seekers and refugees.

We are looking for a Treasurer who understands the community the FfT serves, the services we provide and the objectives to which we aspire. You will also need an understanding of organisational governance and the role of a non-executive Trustee.

We are particularly interested in an individual who is an 'expert by experience' and who has a significant track record in financial management and controls including audit and risk. This trustee will chair the Finance Committee and act as company treasurer and will need to hold an accountancy qualification.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and steer our organisation, and to support and make a real difference to our clients and staff. We aspire to have a diverse board. We want to complement our existing Trustee knowledge of clinical issues, fundraising and governance.

Trustees are expected to commit about 8/10 days a year to meetings in London (usually Tuesday evenings), to two planning and development days (usually on Saturdays) and (where possible) two visits to our national centres across the UK.
