Southern Staffordshire Community Energy Limited
SSCE is seeking to appoint a Treasurer to join its Board. The ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant with proven experience of industry and commerce. It would be advantageous if applicants have an interest in renewable energy conservation, reducing CO2 emissions and creating benefit for the community. The new Treasurer will join a small energetic team who are proud of what SSCE has achieved since its creation in 2012.
About Southern Staffordshire Community Energy Limited (SSCE)
SSCE is a community benefit society that has grown exponentially as follows:
- from a small fund raising of £54K in 2012 for the installation of voltaic arrays on St Giles Hospice and the Village Hall in Whittington, Staffordshire.
- from acting as lead consultant in providing management for the Chase Community Solar project in raising £1 million of funds in 2015 for the installation of 0.9 mW of solar panels on 314 council bungalows for the benefit of over 500 mainly vulnerable tenants. Winner Best Community Energy Project 2015.
- from a £336K-fund raising in 2016 for the benefit of the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust, the St Giles Hospice and the charity Beat the Cold for the installation of 272 kWp of solar panels on hospital roofs in Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford and the St Giles Hospice in Whittington.
These projects have provided a significant reduction in emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. Since its creation SSCE has paid out £81K in Community Benefit of which £45K has been donated to the Staffordshire fuel poverty charity - Beat the Cold - and £36K donated to good causes within the Lichfield and Cannock Chase communities.
The Hospice and Village Hall also benefit from the supply of free electricity from their panels and UHNM from a price below the rates from its normal supplier.
Through its funding of the Beat the Cold, SSCE is a partner in a national flagship project to provide advice and support to patients admitted to hospitals with respiratory problems and to address problems of fuel poverty and cold or damp homes which can cause or exacerbate such issues.
About the role of Treasurer and Board Member at SSCE
The Treasurer will work closely with the Chairman, with Sharenergy Ltd (who provide accounting services) and with the Board to exercise oversight and control of SSCE’s finances. Sales turnover is £60K-£70K.
The Treasurer will review and approve the quarterly management accounts for presentation at board meetings which take place in February, May, August and November. He/she will work with the Chairman and Sharenergy concerning the finalisation of the annual statutory financial statements for submission to the Society’s members at the AGM and for filing with the FCA.
