Job Description

The RSPCA’s Finance, Audit & Risk Committee (FARCOM) is responsible for evaluating the charity’s financial performance. We are supporting the Society to achieve a strong financial footing, and to sustain this position into the future.

In turn, you will support FARCOM in providing oversight and scrutiny of the RSPCA’s financial affairs, and will contribute to the development and strengthening of the Society’s finance function. Using your expertise to provide advice and guidance, you’ll play a full part in reviewing the effectiveness of risk management procedures, ensuring that our financial operations are in line with best practice, and fulfilling duties related to external and internal audit.

Candidates will:

bring an impressive strategic level background in a financial role

demonstrate a strong alignment with the RSPCA’s commitment to animal welfare and a genuine empathy with and compassion for animals.

be a qualified accountant, and bring significant personal gravitas and leadership experience gained by working at (or very near to) Board level in at least one medium to large organisation.

have the knowledge and confidence to lead the board in debates about complex financial and accounting matters.

Examples of a suitable background include (but are not limited to) a leadership role of a finance function, or as a director / partner of a professional services firm operating in this area. In addition to a nuanced grasp of the complexities involved, you must demonstrate a sound understanding of corporate governance best practice and processes.

A broad understanding of pensions or investments would be an advantage, as would an understanding of the UK charity sector and relevant legislation and requirements.

However, strong candidates without these additional attributes should not be dissuaded from applying. A strong personal commitment to the RSPCA’s aims, objectives and values, and the ability to work in a way that demonstrates this and communicates this enthusiasm to others, are non-negotiable.
