Life, free from serious accidental injury
Everything we do at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is guided by two core principles: our vision: for life, free from serious accidental injury; and our mission: exchanging life-enhancing skills and knowledge to reduce serious accidental injuries.
RoSPA’s vision is drawn from our respect for life and all that it contains – the freedom to enjoy personal choices, health, happiness, wellbeing, relationships, and a huge variety of life-affirming activities. Serious accidental injuries are a burden, preventing them from enjoying life to its fullest – and one we are determined to free people from.
Every year across the UK thousands are maimed, and millions are injured, and more than 14,000 people die as a result of accidents. For more than 100 years, RoSPA has been quietly working behind the scenes to change both legislation and attitudes surrounding accidents. We’re responsible for helping to instigate the compulsory wearing of seatbelts; the campaign to stop drink driving; the Cycling Proficiency Test; and the more recent the ban on handheld mobile phones behind the wheel. As a registered charity and through campaigning, carrying out research, influencing legislation, informing and educating, auditing and providing expert consultancy to businesses, we have maintained our position as the leading advocates for the wellbeing of people everywhere.
RoSPA is now seeking to recruit an independent trustee to the Board to act as Treasurer. They should be a qualified accountant, ideally chartered, with broad experience of having worked within the charity and/or commercial sectors. They will probably be serving as or have served as a Financial Director or Controller of a larger charity and/or medium-sized commercial business, for an organisation of comparable size and complexity. He/she will also ideally experience of investment strategy, pension funds, financial systems, financial risk management, liaising with external auditors and investment advisers.
The skills & experience sought
The Treasurer should be able to demonstrate knowledge and ideally experience in the following key areas:
- Membership of other boards or committees at a similar level
- Professional background in finance in commercial and/or charitable sectors
- Experience in investment strategy, pension funds as well as liaison with external auditors and investment advisers
- Charity governance
