About the trust
The Samara Trust, founded in March 2018 and located in Upton, Chester, is a three-school MAT (multi-academy trust), containing both primary school and nursery provisions. The constituent schools in the trust are:
- Clutton CofE Primary School, a small village school in a rural location;
- Little Sutton CofE Primary School, a small church school, located in Ellesmere Port;
- Upton Heath CofE Primary School, a large primary school in Chester, with a new building.
The trust is located in an area of relatively low deprivation, with 7% of its children registered as eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). The number of children with a Special Educational Needs plan, however, is above the national average.
Approximately 600 children attend the trust’s academies, with c.50 staff; among the trust’s provision, there are 11 different languages recorded as the ‘first language’ of its pupils.
The trust serves the local army battalion, 1LANCS, and there has been significant mobility of pupils to the school since its last Ofsted inspection.
The Samara Trust has its own forest school provision – ‘Branching Out’ - and a forest school training provision called ‘Branching Out Training’. Branching Out has been operating forest school sessions at Upton Heath CofE Primary School since 2012 in addition to delivering forest school training for a number of schools both within and outside of the MAT. Branching Out Training is a qualified forest school training providers.

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.
The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.
In the interests of safeguarding, all trustee appointments would be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.
Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

The strategic expertise required for this role includes:

The strategic expertise specifically sought by the trust include finance, HR and property but the trust would welcome applicants with experience in corporate governance and business growth, as well as individuals with prior senior level, strategic expertise in securing bids, managing complex multi-site facilities and developing strategy. Candidates should be confident and competent in challenging senior leaders and holding executive to account. All trustees have a passion for developing young people and are committed to their welfare and safety. A knowledge of education is not required and training will be provided.
