About the trust

At Partnership Learning, the ethos aims to maximise social mobility, giving all pupils the same opportunities as their most favoured peers – outstanding teaching, schools organised around the ability profile of their pupils and wide-ranging enrichment activities to develop confidence and resilience.

The trust serves disadvantaged localities in Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Southend and Waltham Forest. Proportions of Pupils Eligible for Free School Meals c.50%, Ethnic Minority Pupils c.60%, Pupils with English as an Additional Language c.40% and Pupils with Special Educational Needs or Disability c.15% are significantly above national averages.

Sydney Russell School is currently rated Outstanding by Ofsted with seven of the other schools in the trust rated Good, three rated Requiring Improvement and one Inadequate. The trust’s leadership team are confident that all schools in the trust will be rated at least Good by the time Ofsted return!

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director


Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.

The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

In the interests of safeguarding, all trustee appointments would be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Finance: The ideal candidate will have experience at a senior level in financial management and comfortable dealing with a budget of over £50 million.


Role description :
To be a Board Director/Trustee, attending six Board Meetings a year;
To oversee vision, ethos and strategic direction of the trust;
To hold leaders to account for the trust’s educational performance and performance management of staff;
To ensure effective financial performance of the trust.

Time commitment

6 hours per month minimum. Number of board meetings 6 per year.
