The Bishop Anthony Educational Trust

The Bishop Anthony Educational Trust seeks to appoint up to three new trustees with skills and experience in change management, along with finance, HR and corporate governance, as it looks to consolidate its position. Candidates of all faiths and none are invited to apply for these roles. Board meetings are held at Ludlow Eco Park, Ludlow.

About the trust

Bishop Anthony Educational Trust was formed in 2013 to support church schools in the Diocese of Hereford. The geographical spread of schools in the trust covers the whole of the Diocese and includes very small rural primary schools and much larger secondary schools.

The trust now has a substantive core staff and is looking to grow over the next few years. The trust

is being approached by ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ schools to be partner academies and is holding

ongoing discussions with a number of primary schools in both Herefordshire and Shropshire with a view to undertaking a growth strategy.

The trust’s Articles of Association give it the scope to include non-church schools in the trust and Members of the trust are drawn from the Diocesan Board of Education who, in turn, appoint the majority of the trustees.

The trust comprises ten Church of England primary schools, two Church of England secondary schools, one community primary school, one community junior school and one community infant and nursery school. It has plans to merge its infant and junior Schools in 2019 and has three church primary schools waiting to join the trust in the future.

Plans for the future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months include:

  1. Financial security and stability for the trust as a whole, through greater use of shared procurement and leadership.
  2. Development of geographical hubs of schools working together on a shared school improvement agenda.
  3. Improving the skill set of governance across the trust both at board level and at local academy level, through sharing of expertise and time.

The trust is also aiming to make significant changes to its financial management and aspects of this are central to its objectives for the coming 12-24 months.

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The trust seeks a non-executive director with background acumen in the area of business

management and financial control, with the aim of providing additional support to the Resources Committee or Audit and Risk Committee.

The trust seeks up to three individuals capable of bringing energy and enthusiasm, demonstrating a willingness and aptitude for developing the trust’s strategic plan to manage future financial challenges and supporting through the change inherent in a developing multi-academy trust.

At least one individual with experience of managing the complexities of a developing organisation is required, preferably with demonstrable HR skills and a relevant qualification in the field. Similarly, a candidate with demonstrable financial expertise, including an accountancy or finance qualification, is required.

Significant business acumen is highly sought across all applicants, with individuals who understand the current financial challenges within the education sector. Experience and exposure to working in the public sector is welcomed, though not an essential requirement. The ideal individual/s will be solution-focused and ‘hands-on’ in their approach to strategy and have experience of working in an organisation through a period of change.

Time commitment

6 hours /month minimum.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 775 multi-academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
