The Mast Academy Trust
The Mast Academy Trust seeks two new non-executive directors, with legal, finance and marketing skills, to join its board. The trust was established in December 2016 to build upon strong, existing partnerships around the pupils and families in its locality, through academy status. The four schools within the trust have now established strong relationships and over the next 12 - 24 months the trust will engage with other schools, with a target growth rate of up to two additional schools per annum. Board meetings are held at Scisset Middle School, Wakefield.
About the trust
The Mast Academy Trust was established in December 2016 to build upon strong, existing partnerships in its locality.
The trust currently comprises four ’Good’ and ’Outstanding’ schools across the 4-13 years age range; two middle schools (Kirkburton and Scissett) and two first schools (Shelley and Birdesedge), comprising around 1,400 pupils in mainstream education. Working strategically together, within its three-tier pyramid of schools and with other services, the trust aims to transform provision and outcomes for its pupils and their families.
Alongside its improvement work in its current member academies, the trust plans to work actively with other schools and the Regional Schools Commissioner (RSC) to grow its family of academies. It anticipates this facilitating enhanced system-led improvements, opportunities for collaboration between leaders and staff within the organisation and better economies of scale as required in the challenging educational climate. Over time, Mast seeks to provide opportunities for schools to convert to academy status.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To ensure the ongoing excellent educational outcomes of all the schools with a robust and sustainable school improvement model that benefits all current and future schools in the trust.
- To continue to embed effective governance so that the solid base already established by the trust can continue and capacity for improvement is ensured at the local governing body (LGB) and trust level.
- To shape the trust in such a way that its collaborative culture can embrace other schools wishing to join. New schools joining the trust will have to be committed to its values of collaboration in order to ensure its continued success.

Roles 1-2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth and holding the CEO/CFO to account.
The competencies required for this role include:

The trust seeks up to two individuals, both of whom should possess a strong, general management skill set, demonstrated through experience in running an organisation of significant size, with responsibility for large budgets and workforce. In addition, the roles require specific experience and more importantly, relevant professional qualifications, in legal and/or finance. Willingness to work constructively and effectively with in accordance with the ‘Nolan Principles: Standards of Public Life’ is essential.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi-academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
