Job Description

ALL SAINTS SCHOOLS TRUST (ASST)

 

All Saints Schools Trust, a multi academy trust of small rural church and community primary schools in North Suffolk, seeks a non-executive director/trustee with expertise in finance to join its board. Applicants of all faiths and none are welcomed. Board meetings are primarily held at Eye, Suffolk; however, they do also rotate around the schools.

 

About the trust

 

The All Saints Schools Trust is a multi-academy trust comprising of eight primary academies and was established on 1st April 2018 in Suffolk. The trust has 802 pupils (ages 4-11) and 150 staff across all the schools with a budget of £3.5m. All schools within the Trust are currently graded Good or Outstanding by Ofsted. The trust is just about to welcome its ninth school, Great Whelnetham sponsored academy near Bury St Edmunds and is committed to supporting schools in challenging circumstances.

 

The All Saints Schools Trust is a new partnership that strengthens and sustains the quality of education each school is able to offer their children and young people through greater collaboration and joint working between member schools. Each school, already successful in its own right, plays an important role within the communities they serve, with a distinctive ethos and individual approach.

 

 

Plans for the future

ASST has ambitions to increase the numbers of schools in the trust through a model of sustained growth.

The key challenges for the next 12 months for the trust are to:

  1. Increase the number of schools and pupils in the trust whilst maintaining  performance standards and outcomes for all children
  2. Effectively restructure centralised core functions to ensure efficiency gains and financial stability
  3. Adapt to a changing demographic and declining population
  4. Accommodate cuts in school transport and resulting increases in costs
  5. Developing shared leadership and sustainable system leadership to build in capacity to support both existing and new schools coming into the trust.

Role 1– Trustee/Non-Executive Director

All Saints Schools Trust seeks one Trustee with a professional background in finance.

 

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

 

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

 

Person specification

Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Individuals with accountancy backgrounds would be especially welcome to apply and would complement the skill set currently on the board. However, other relevant and senior business or finance backgrounds may be considered.

2 hours /month minimum.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

 

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
