Arbor Academy Trust seeks a senior finance professional to join the board, supporting over 2,100 pupils across three primary schools. Board meetings are held in Leytonstone, London.


About the trust

Arbor Academy Trust in the London Borough of Waltham Forest has three primary schools where progress is well above the national average. Together, they have over 2,100 pupils, 257staff and a budget of £10.6millon.


The trust was established in 2016, initially consisting of two primary schools with the third primary school joining in February 2019. The trust also manages two nurseries on behalf of the local authority and is a significant early years provider with some 500 children aged 2 -5.  Over 60% of the trust’s buildings are less than four years old. 19% of children are pupil premium, 34% have English as a second language and the trust has developed an inclusive curriculum meeting the social and cultural diversity of our children which can be viewed at The trust also has a 28-place unit for children within the autistic spectrum with recent approval by the local authority to open a second one making it one of the largest mainstream providers in England.


  • Davies Lane Primary School has four forms of entry in Leytonstone. It has been rated by Ofsted as Outstanding since 2014 and is a Teaching School. The enlargement and refurbishment of Davies Lane Primary was completed in 2017.
  • Selwyn Primary School has three forms of entry in Chingford and has been rated Good since 2014 and Good moving to outstanding in 2018. The trust managed Selwyn Primary School moving into new buildings in 2018.
  • Woodford Green Primary School has one form of entry in Chingford. It joined the trust in February 2019 and was rated Good by Ofsted in 2017.


Plans for the future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Continue raising standards so that all schools are outstanding. This is the trust’s overriding objective and underpins all that they do; through broadening the curriculum on offer, valuing staff through extensive professional development and creating an environment where all children can thrive.
  2. Continue building greater strength in financial and human resources – the trust earns significant funding through supporting other schools (mainly through teaching school activities). They use this funding to broaden the curriculum on offer to pupils and to develop the skills and teaching and learning opportunities of all staff.
  3. Develop stronger relationships with other schools – Arbor Academy Trust has a successful track record of supporting other schools. Through the Teaching School they collaborate with other schools in driving forward initiatives in primary challenge, reading and mathematics mastery. Arbor Academy Trust encourages active participation of parents and carers. It currently supports a group of schools in Norfolk


Arbor Academy Trust aims to grow over the next two years, becoming a regional multi-academy trust with between five and ten schools. This could be through establishing a new hub within a wider geographical area or individual underperforming/ successful schools. It has significant strength in national and specialist leaders of education.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

The appointed non-executive director/trustee will take a lead role in developing the financial strategy for the trust. They will ensure that the trust has financial sustainability and uses its resources effectively to grow in size and achieve outstanding judgements for all its schools. The strategic expertise required for this role includes:

Applicants should be able to demonstrate their successful finance experience and expertise at a senior level, preferably with direct experience of audit. They should also have experience in change management and growing capacity and sustainability within a medium to large organisation.


Time commitment

6 hours /month minimum. There are currently three main board meetings held termly at 6.00pm.  The candidate will ideally chair the annual Audit Committee and attend the Finance Committee which meets termly.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.


Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
