Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Birmingham? Unity MAT (Multi Academy Trust) seeks up to three non-executive directors / trustees to join its board.

The Academy Ambassadors Programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

A two-school multi-academy trust in the Coleshill area of east Birmingham, Unity MAT seeks up to three non-executive directors/trustees to strengthen its governance, contribute towards its vision for growth and develop a compelling offer to other academies interested in joining the trust in future. A range of skills are sought to ensure a full coverage around the board table, with a specific focus on Legal, Health and Safety and Finance. Board meetings are held at Woodlands School, Packington Lane, Coleshill.

The board seeks three business leaders with expertise in

·       audit and

·       finance or

·       legal or

·       health and safety

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:

Governance - ensuring the right people are around the table at all levels of governance within the trust;

Development - producing a compelling, coherent and attractive offer to schools that may consider joining the trust;

Growth – expansion of the trust in a sustainable, financially viable way without causing unacceptable risk to its existing schools.

Over the longer term, the trust aims to have appropriate governance at all levels enabling collaboration with other schools within the geographic area.

What’s involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours’ time per month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

 As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our alumni network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role. All roles are pro bono.
