Job Description

This is an opportunity to contribute to the community within Sowerby by becoming an Academy Ambassador and Trustee at Together Learning Trust. Board meetings are held at HX6 1DG when safe to do so, however are currently held via virtual means.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at single-academy and multi-academy trusts (SATs and MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

Together Learning Trust was founded in September 2019, with five partner schools, two secondary-age schools (Ryburn Valley and Honley) and three primary-age schools (Bolton Brow, Meltham and Netherton Nursery & Infant). The trust has a budget of approx. £20.6m, and employs 435 staff to support and inspire over 3400 young people across Kirklees and Calderdale in West Yorkshire. All 5 schools are Ofsted rated as ‘Good’ and developing toward outstanding.
The trust’s ambition is to grow great people and talent in the region and beyond and expand to at least double in size over the next five years. The board seeks two business leaders with board level experience in a combination of the following:

  • Health and Safety
  • Risk Management
  • Estates/Facilities Management
  • Legal

It is expected that candidates will be particularly involved with Audit, Finance and Risk Committee which currently meets 3 times per year. They would be involved with business development and growth strategies especially in the area of Health, Safety, and Risk. Ideal candidates will have involvement in both external and internal audits and production of risk assessment and other risk management documentation for large scale companies.

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:

  1. To implement our sustainable Growth Strategy
  2. To minimise risks as we grow and drive our schools toward outstanding
  3. To implement our buildings improvement programme

What’s involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which at Together Learning Trust consists of attending 7 meetings per academic year, amounting to approx. 5hours commitment a month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.
