Based in Clacton-on-Sea, Premier Learning Trust seeks to recruit three non-executive directors to support growing education standards across a pupil cohort of almost 900 with an average of 22% deprivation. Of the recruited non-executive directors, experience in HR, property and finance are required. Board meetings rotate between the two schools.
About the trust
Premier Learning Trust consists of two schools – one primary (Holland Park Primary School) and one junior school (Alton Park Junior School). The primary is two-form entry and the junior is four-form entry, totalling almost 900 pupils with 150 staff across the trust.
Holland Park Primary at its last Ofsted inspection before conversion was rated ‘Good’ and was asked to work with Alton Park Junior. This led very rapidly to a collaborative multi-academy trust approved in April 2016.
Both schools are in coastal settings, with deprivation reaching heights of 51% at Alton Park Junior. Furthermore, levels of pupil exclusion in this area have incited a need, recognised by the local authority, to open a new alternative provision free school. Premier Learning Trust is working with the Local Authority and other partners locally to help facilitate this.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To raise education standards of teaching and learning to achieve ratings of Good by Ofsted.
- Continue to provide a strong provision for supporting children and families in challenging circumstances.
- Open a new alternative provision free school
Over the next five years, the trust hopes to further study various methods of teaching and learning to provide the best curriculum at the forefront of educational research.

Role 1, 2 & 3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
The competencies required for this role include:
- Real Estate/Property OR
- HR OR
- Change Management
- Growth Management
- Corporate Governance
Property: The trust seeks candidates with extensive experience in a real estate/property setting in order to advise on infrastructure and estates management.
HR: In this role, the non-executive director will advise on HR to enable fellow trustees to understand and challenge restructuring, change management, succession planning and HR legislation. The ideal candidate will have senior experience in HR with specific expertise to advise from a board level.
Finance: Candidates will have director or executive level experience in finance, including but not limited to qualified accountants. the non-executive director will understand and challenge the trust budget and finance reports, examine significant procurements and contracts and ensure the Finance, Audit and Premises Committee discharge their delegated responsibilities effectively.
Time Commitment: 6 hours per month minimum.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi-academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
