Consilium Academies seeks to recruit new non-executive directors to its board. The trust was approved as a multi-academy trust (MAT) and an academy sponsor in January 2015. It consists of eight secondary academies and operates in three hubs: North West (three academies), North East (four academies) and South Yorkshire (one academy). The trust aims to work with each academy in a supportive way that does not detract from its individual identity. The staff across the trust are encouraged to work together to create a truly outward looking and collaborative organisation. Board meetings are held in Leeds.
About the trust
Consilium Academies operates as a MAT across three geographical hubs, providing leadership and high-quality educational provision to children and young people within the communities of Salford, Darlington, Sunderland, Gateshead and Doncaster.
The Trust works with Ofsted inspectors and strong local authority services to provide support and challenge to its academies. Its focus comes from the completion of initial due diligence which is then refreshed following a termly review with each academy’s leadership team. The support provided is flexible, adaptable and directly linked to identified need. Strong ownership is established at school level from the outset, thereby building on the positive culture required by the trust’s vision and values. This is supplemented by an operational structure which implements strong governance, clear and transparent procedures and a consistent framework which doesn’t remove an academy’s individual identity.
Plans for the future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To develop a new corporate brand for the trust and seek approval to grow, particularly in the South Yorkshire area.
- To sustain educational improvements across the trust
- To develop common frameworks of assessment and syllabus across the trust
Following a governance restructure in July 2018, the role of the trust board and trustees will be to provide a strong challenge to see the trust ethos and vision are achieved and its young people’s aspirations and opportunities provided for.

Ensure every young person achieves their potential and every academy improves by:
- Aiming to provide the best possible education and experiences to develop the whole child during their time under the trust’s influence.
- Creating provision for young people that gives value for money in an environment where they feel safe and secure to develop themselves, personally and educationally.
- Taking advantage of the school led system predicated on collaboration and partnerships. This will entail linking with outstanding teaching schools and school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) providers to ensure transfer of knowledge and good practice. The capacity created from such arrangements will ensure that the trust achieves the aims for children and adults in its academies.
- Ensuring that families are an integral part of their children’s education by developing a positive and supportive relationship. An inclusive and welcoming approach to those adults who feel marginalised by traditional educational practices will be a key component of Consilium Academies’ routines. The trust intends to close the gap between disadvantaged children and the rest either in attainment or opportunity.

Roles 1-4 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The board meets twice in the autumn term and then once in each of the spring and summer terms (making 4 full board meetings in all). The board then operates two committees (Performance and Resources) each of which meets 4 times a year. Frequently, two of the three meetings are run consecutively (i.e. 2 meetings in one day) starting at 4 p.m. and running for an overall total of 4 hours.
Trustees will be required to read papers etc before meetings and the total time required is likely to average around 4-6 hours per month including preparation, meetings and occasional training.

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 775 multi-academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
