Nunthorpe Multi Academy Trust (NMAT)


Nunthorpe Multi Academy Trust, a two-school trust situated in Middlesbrough, seeks to recruit one additional trustee / non-executive director to its Board of Trustees. In particular, skills in the field of law are sought, while expertise in risk are also desirable. Board meetings are held in the Middlesbrough area.


About the trust

Nunthorpe Multi Academy Trust (NMAT) emerged in 2016 from Nunthorpe Single Academy Trust (SAT). For a number of years, the governors and Senior Leaders at the seminal Nunthorpe Academy had shared an ambition to develop a MAT, working with like-minded colleagues to improve the educational offer for young people in the Tees Valley.


Nunthorpe Academy is the lead Teaching School of North East Schools Teaching Alliance. The Teaching School was founded in April 2014 and was originally made up of Nunthorpe Academy, Chandlers Ridge Academy, Ormesby Primary Academy, Normanby Primary Academy, Nunthorpe Primary Academy and Skelton Primary School. Since then Freebrough Academy, Rye Hills Academy and Zetland Primary School have also joined the alliance.


The Teaching School works in partnership with Northumbria University and over the last two years has successfully trained Primary and Secondary teachers, supported staff to complete Masters in Education, delivered multiple successful training events and operates as the lead for the North East Regional Network for ‘Women Leading in Education’ supported by NCTL and funded by the DfE.


Plans for the future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:


  1. Growth - addressing current barriers to growth and allowing the trust to grow in line with the NMAT growth strategy;
  2. Respond to local needs – to recognise and respond to respond to the needs of the students in the trust, and more widely, to those of the local community. To raise aspirations and ensure NMAT students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to progress to the next phase of their education and training;
  3. Ofsted framework - Responding to the demands of the new Ofsted framework and other national statutory changes and measures.


Over the medium term, the trust is focused on sustained high performance and outcomes for students, with ‘high urgency’ towards this level where it is not already present. Furthermore, the trust aims to utilise the high quality provision within its existing academies to sponsor another academy, helping it to improve and develop - attracting likeminded academies into NMAT will enable it to build capacity.

More broadly, the board is keen to ensure NMAT continues its growth plan, underpinned by its own robust strategy.

Trustee/Non-Executive Director


Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.


The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.


The Competency Framework for Governance (DfE) 2017 details the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for effective governance.


The strategic expertise required for this role includes:

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience with a proven track record in the field of Legal/ Compliance. The trust seeks an individual who can commit to its values and principles and its academies, possess short and long term strategic vision and good, independent, judgement. A clear understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship is vital to anyone considering this role, as well as the understanding that a contribution to the trust direction and strategy, and an ability to work effectively as a member of a team, are core aspects of the role.


As the trust is on a growth trajectory, experience of managing and overseeing the legal implications, complexities and challenges of growth in a medium-sized non-profit or charity is highly desirable. Experience in managing risk, especially in relation to growth, is likewise highly desirable.



Time commitment

Five hours /month minimum.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.


Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
