Trinity Academy Newcastle is a multi-academy trust (MAT) based within the West End of Newcastle. The trust seeks two new non-executive directors to join the board and assist with financial stability and strategic operations, so that it may succeed and expand, as a Special MAT, to provide for young people in the community. Board meetings are held in the Newcastle upon Tyne area.
About the trust
The identified needs of the students within Trinity Academy Newcastle are complex and significant, in the area of Social, Emotional and Mental Health, as described in the SEN Code of Practice. Students may also have associated needs in the areas of cognition/learning and communication and interaction (autistic spectrum disorder and/or speech and language difficulties).
The trust comprises two academies and one private company. Trinity Academy is a Non-Maintained Day Special Academy, for students between the ages of 7-16 years (Key Stages 2-4), and Trinity Solutions Academy is a Post-16 provision, for students aged 16-19 years. There is also a provision within the trust for the education of Post -19 Learners with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (LLDD) Students; this is called Trinity Post-16 Solutions Limited. It is a private company, which provides older students with an appropriately paced and differentiated curriculum.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Maintaining financial stability.
- Ensuring the Directors skillset is relevant to the needs of the trust.
- Expanding the Trust as a Special MAT
As part of the expansion of the MAT, the trust plan to include another Special academy. It is also exploring a Free School application.

Trustees are responsible for overseeing growth and providing support to the trust board. As a trustee, individuals are asked to provide scrutiny and challenge to the board. They will develop and review strategic plans; ensure the operation of the trust complies with its legal requirements and delivers a high-quality curriculum, using resources efficiently and effectively, with the aim of delivering outstanding education and outcomes for its pupils and communities.
The trust is seeking talented individuals who have the ability to work strategically, with experience of leadership at management or director level.
The competencies required for these roles include:
- CEO/General Management
- Change Management
- Growth Management
Due to the nature of the trust – it is beneficial for this individual to have interest and preferably experience in the education sector, social care, Looked-After-Children, or Special Educational Needs related professions.
4 hours per month (minimum).

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
