Equals Trust is a collaborative primary multi-academy trust, comprising eight primary schools in south Nottinghamshire. The trust seeks to recruit a non-executive director with a strong financial background, including an understanding and experience of financial planning and accounting at a management level, to join its board. Board meetings are held in the Nottingham area (NG12 5FB).
About the Trust
The trust was founded in September 2016 and is based on the principal of equality with the aim of allowing member schools to maintain their ethos and unique identities within a tight local network. The trust promotes strong mutual accountability across its schools, shared support services and a strong collaborative approach to staff development and school improvement. All schools within the trust are good/ outstanding
Equals Trust is a growing trust, with two further primary schools due to join in the next nine months. Central to the collaborative ethos of the trust is its Leadership Group of head teachers: led by the CEO, the group has delegated responsibility for the improvement of teaching and learning within the trust.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To address the needs of schools against funding restrictions and constantly seek best value.
- To ensure the support structure is sustainable.
- To ensure schools receive ongoing appropriate support according to their needs as the trust grows.
The trust aims to grow to 12-15 primary schools over time and has registered with the Regional Schools Commissioner’s office as a sponsor for schools requiring support.

Role1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a periods of growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO and CFO/Trust Finance Manager to account.
The competencies required for this role include:

The trust seeks a trustee with a strong financial background, with specific emphasis financial planning and accounting at a management level. Experience with public sector or charity funding would be an advantage but is not essential. This individual is required to challenge and ask difficult questions, while understanding the need to prioritise children’s outcomes as the trust seeks to grow in future.
4-6 hours per month (on average)
The normal meeting patters is for 6 trust board meetings per year (roughly one each half term) and 4 Finance & Audit meetings per year. These meetings are generally held at 6:30 in the evenings and always finish within 2 hours. In addition, there are 4 meetings with the Trust Finance Manager which can be scheduled at times to suit the trustee..

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
