Job Description

CHANGE Schools Partnership in Essex seeks three board members with experience in either law, IT, estate management or finance to support the trust as it seeks to grow over the next two years. Board meetings are held in Colchester.


About the trust

CHANGE Schools Partnership is a multi-academy trust (MAT) of four primary age range school based in Mid and North East Essex that has been in existence since 2013. The trust currently has around 1350 pupils in total and the schools range from a small village primary to a four-form entry junior school. The schools within CHANGE Schools Partnership serve mixed communities, some of which are in areas of deprivation. The trust has aspirations to grow further and are considering the inclusion of special schools and secondary schools.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Continuing to sustain a secure financial position in the light of reduced funding and increasing costs. This also means that the trust needs to continue to grow the MAT to find additional economies of scale. The support of high quality governance in this area is a real benefit.
  2. Teacher recruitment and retention - teacher recruitment across the whole sector is becoming increasingly challenging and the trust is working hard to 'grow our own'. With significantly less teachers training than the system as a whole requires, the trust seeks to develop a creative, blended recruitment strategy.
  3. Achieving high achievement outcomes for pupils in the light of challenge one and two. The challenge is also to ensure that children have access to the best curriculum particularly that which is technology enabled. The trust is currently developing a trust wide ICT strategy.

CHANGE Schools Partnership is developing a Central Services team to maximise efficiencies. It aspires to grow a MAT to around 15 schools based in two hubs and early discussions are in process with a variety of schools.

Roles 1 & 2 & 3– Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law. The competencies required for this role include:

Person Specification

The trust is keen to appoint non-executive directors with the ability to analyse and question data; contribute to strategic development and have a passion for the educational outcomes of children and young people is essential. A background/expertise in senior leadership and one or more of the following areas is desirable: legal, marketing, finance, health and safety or estate management.

Time Commitment

6 hours /month minimum.

Background on Academy Trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
