Job Description

Alban Academy Trust in Hertfordshire seek three non-executive directors with HR, property, procurement and financial experience to joining this newly formed trust. Board meetings are held in St. Albans.


About the Trust

Alban Academy Trust (ATT) is a new Multi Academy Trust (MAT) set up to serve primary and secondary schools in Hertfordshire with the aim to build a learning community to share educational excellence for everyone.


The AAT currently has one school in the trust: Sandringham School, St. Albans. From September 2018, a new school will be established: the Ridgeway Academy in Welwyn Garden City, formerly the Sir Frederic Osborn School (judged by Ofsted as ‘Requires Improvement’). Verulam School, St. Albans is also in the legal process of joining the trust (currently graded 4 – serious weaknesses). Wheatfields Junior School and Wheatfields Infant School are also converting from maintained status to join the trust.  Some other schools including primaries are considering their next steps with the AAT.


Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Establish the Multi Academy Trust: ensuring governance is appropriate for the needs of the schools involved.
  2. Develop strong working partnerships between all schools in the trust.
  3. Support each school in making significant progress for the benefit of young people served by the trust.

The trust would like to establish the Alban Academies Trust as a preferred MAT in the St. Albans area for schools considering conversion to contribute to an ongoing, self-improving system of leadership.

Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Person Specification

  • Finance: significant experience of finance and ability to support the trust in planning and delivering a robust financial strategy.

  • Real estate/Property: significant experience of managing real estate/property and ability to support the trust in planning and delivering a robust capital development strategy.


Time Commitment

6 hours /month minimum.

Background on Academy Trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 29% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 760 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You do not need to have any specialist knowledge of education but having a genuine interest in young peoples’ progress and wellbeing plus a commitment to learning about educational developments are essential.
