Severn Academies Educational Trust (SAET) is seeking to appoint a trustee to its board of directors; it seeks an individual possessing skills in the area of finance and growth management. Board meetings are held at The Stourport High School & Sixth Form College, Stourport-on-Severn. Applicants of all faiths and of none are welcomed.
About the Trust
The Severn Academies Educational Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) situated in the Stourport/Kidderminster area. The trust was established in September 2016 and has grown steadily since. Trust schools are located in a high priority area of the West Midlands where the attainment gap between Pupil Premium (PP) and non-PP students is difficult to close. The schools in the trust serve some of the most deprived wards within the region.
The trust is mixed in age range, also with both faith and non-faith schools. At present, it comprises two high schools and four primary schools. It is seeking to add two more primary schools to the trust.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- To be able to effectively manage a growth strategy that allows for robust and sustainable school improvement alongside realising economies of scale.
- To ensure that governance at all levels within the trust is effective, challenging and supportive.
- To effectively manage challenging school budgets in order to ensure that the children still retain opportunities to learn, and do not experience disadvantage as a result of financial structuring.
- Open an alternative provision Free School to ensure children remain educated locally.
The trust is targeting an effective growth strategy as it aims to develop further and ultimately achieve the National Schools Commissioner’s target of a 10-15 school MAT.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The trust is seeking to recruit a candidate possessing extensive and demonstrable finance experience, preferably within the public sector, in order to provide robust challenge to the CFO and CEO, and to complement the existing skill set of the board.
8 hours /month minimum - including some pre-reading.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
